Hens and Chicks

Hens and chicks is the common name for this succulent with it's heritage from Europe  and North Africa. They grow close to the ground with their rosette leaves. The "Hen" is the main plant and the "Chicks" are the offspring which starts as tiny buds and soon sprout their own roots, taking up residence close to the mother plant. They will flower after several years with a stalk up to six inches tall.  Keep them in the sun and on the dry side for optimum performance.

Ice Plant

Dryland ground covers, rock garden accents, xeric garden edgings, trough plantings, all are good uses for ice plants. They thrive in low water settings in clay and tolerate more moisture in sharp draining soils. Unlike sedum, they are not a deer or rabbit magnet and can be used on sloping sand for erosion control and around structures as part of a fire resistant landscape. Consider planting these between stepping stones in spots that seem too hot and dry for thymes.

Sedum

Sedum, also known as stonecrop, is one of the largest plant genus in the world with about 400 different types. They range from ground hugging annuals to cold weather perennials, even some as shrubs! They are found throughout the Northern Hemisphere.  The ones we offer like the sun and to be kept on the dry side.

Angelina Sedum   Angelina Sedum (Sedum rupestre ‘Angelina’) Sedum Angelina

This Proven Winners’ plant from Croatia really is a winner. Brilliant yellow tipped light green conifer shaped leaves become orange tinged during early and late season growing conditions. The 6 to 8 inch tall by up to 12 inch wide plant is a strong grower and is as tough as nails: successfully over wintering in rock pockets and at the edges of planters left outdoors and ignored. Use this one not only in the traditional sunny dry garden as a groundcover, edging, or accent but also in combination hanging baskets, as planter or barrel edging. Best color develops in full sun.

Rain Gauge

Throughout this site, the following are used as guidelines for watering established plants:

These plants need regular watering somewhat like a bluegrass lawn so that they never dry to depth in the root system during the active growing season and need occasional winter watering to prevent root dessication and resultant plant death.

These plants are adapted to intermittent deep watering with soil drying to a depth of a few inches between waterings. Watering frequency may be every couple of weeks during the active growing season and maybe only one winter watering for optimal care.

These truly xeric plants can live with our 12 inches of natural precipitation and only need a winter watering during a multi-year drought but they will thrive with a monthly watering. Overwatering will kill some of these.
